For the past generation, the dental
industry has been working tirelessly to give men and women the option
for perfect teeth through cosmetic dentistry. If several of our body parts can get a lift to make it more appealing, why not the teeth?
Cosmetic dentistry refers to a dental procedure that improves the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums, and/or bite.
Perhaps the simplest and the most common
form of cosmetic dentistry is teeth whitening. There are several ways
it can be done. It may be done at home with simple materials like a
tooth whitening toothpaste or hydrogen peroxide and DIY procedures. It
can also be done with the help of a dental professional through tooth
bleaching. This procedure is performed by a dentist to give you those
pearly white teeth as you go out from the dental office. He/She may use a
high concentrated gel in the process.
Filling of gaps and ugly cracks can be
cosmetically remedied by the application of dental bonding or dental
veneers. It coats the teeth with a tooth-colored ceramic substance, and
it can take the place of tooth whitening.
For missing teeth that keeps us from
smiling readily, an artificial crown may be suggested. They can also be
used to cover up unsightly cavities. Another option is undergoing a
dental implant, where the artificial tooth is hooked into a titanium
post and screwed into the jawbone thru surgery. It is meant to stay
there permanently for a more natural look.
Gum lift – a dental procedure that raises the gum line to give the illusion that the teeth are long and symmetrical.
Orthodontics – a
specialized field of dentistry that corrects the teeth by the use of
braces and retainers. It facilitates alignment of the lower and the
upper teeth and straightens crooked ones. It also relieves the pressure
on temporomandibular joints.
Ideal brace age for children is seven to
twelve years old. This will not only align the teeth, but also improve
the overall facial profile. Treatment for adults may be more difficult.
This is a more complicated treatment and requires commitment on the
part of the patient. The course of the treatment may last for months or
years. After the treatment, the patient may be still required to wear
their retainers at night for many years.
We are living in the modern age where
our photos can reach every corner of the globe in seconds. To create and
project a better image of ourselves as we flash our beautiful smile, a
perfect teeth is our ally.
